What concerns me is how the Japanese could act so humanly in ww1 and so cruel in ww2. Are they the decent people that we know today or are they just a moment from being the Japanese of ww2

I don't blame Doorman; he did what he was ordered to do and what he was supposed to do: defend his country. It doesn't matter if the enemy has 10 ships and you have only five; you are the "warriors" of your country and your job is to defend your people. That's your only job. What was he to do? Sit back and watch the invasion fleet sail by because it was a fight he had very low chances of winning?? Take his ships and sailors, built and trained for this very purpose home without a scratch while the enemy lands unopposed?? He did exactly what he should have done; he and all who participated upheld their honor.

We Americans so often only hear about the heroism of other Americans. I know we can’t necessarily teach Everything to Everybody, but….the story of Admiral Karel Doorman deserves to be much more well known. Probably the greatest Dutch 🇳🇱 hero of WW2.
